More upsets. Yummy.
–UPSET–Xavier 80, No. 8 Indiana 65. A lovely win for Xavier and one that could really resonate three-and-a-half months from now. Eric Gordon contributed 20 points for IU, but Xavier just beat Indiana from buzzer to buzzer. Very nice win at home for XU. Georgia Tech and Southern Illinois are next up on the slate for the Hoosiers. Keep an eye on those games.
–UPSET–Seton Hall 74, Virginia 60. Perhaps SHU and UVA will be switching positions in the Top 25 on Monday.
–No. 1 North Carolina 73, Brigham Young 63.This was a close game until about the two-minute mark in the second half. Wayne Ellington hit a huge trey to seal the deal for the Heels.
–No. 6 Louisville 64, Old Dominion 53. The Cards will sTtill be outside of the top ten slots of the AP poll on Monday, but a good recovery win for the Cards.
–No. 15 Texas 97, No. 7 Tennessee 78. Given CHJ’s rule of upsets (if they rank within 10 poll standings of one and other, it’s not an upset), this one does not qualify. It’s still a really good win for Texas, who might be flying under the radar at this point. The “life after Kevin Durant” stories will get old really quickly. Don’t forget: Texas was an underachieving team with Durant last season.
–No. 9 Washington State 71, Mississippi Valley State 26. That’s almost a triple-up, but not quite, Cougars! I am falling for this team very quickly.
–No. 10 Michigan State 75, Oakland 71. The Spartans squeak by, but they always seem to have these types of outcomes in November.
–No. 12 Oregon 110, San Francisco 79. Wow, 110 points? The amazing thing is that no Duck scored more than 18 and 10 players scored. A nice rebound win coming off that upsetting lose to Saint Mary’s on Tuesday night.
–No. 14 Gonzaga 82, Virginia Tech 64. In case you had forgotten, Va Tech was a Tournament team last year, and they look anything but this season. 2-2 this season, are the Hokies, and they appear to have a long way to go. Expect Gonzaga to still be ranked come Monday, following this win and a loss to Texas Tech.
–No. 22 Butler 81, Texas Tech 71. Speaking of Knight’s team, they could not handle Butler by any means. This was a great game to watch (almost had a high school feel with the type of gym that they play in at the Great Alaska Shootout). If the Bulldogs can string together a 28-win season or better, they can definitely improve upon that 5-seed they received last year.
–No. 24 Clemson 96, Gardner-Webb 67. Alright, well, let’s turn off the lights and lock the doors on the Gardner-Webb party, because it’s d.o.n.e. Clemson still won’t have anything but a bagel next to their names in the loss column.
