Thank God I have two televisions in my living room, because it was a great day for sports. I’m ready for tomorrow, too; I live with three Giants fans.
–UPSET–Oregon 84, No. 21 Arizona 74. Give credit here to the Ducks, who really needed this win on the road. Arizona as playing as well as you could ask of them, and it wouldn’t have surprised me if this was a 15-point ‘Zona win. Nope, not today. Malik Hairston exploded for 29 points for Oregon, Chase Budinger bested him by one point for the Wildcats. It was intriguing to watch, despite the fact that Oregon nursed their lead for a large portion of the entire game.
–No. 2 Memphis 90, Pepperdine 53. Given that College Gameday premiered today, there was some significant Memphis going undefeated talk by Captain Color Coordination. I’d love to see it happen, but I still don’t think it will. Oh yeah, as for the game, Doneal Mack led the Tigers (who? Mack?) with 17 points. Mack is about the fourth option of the bench for Calipari, so you really get a sense of how this team is being throughly bred for March.
–No. 3 Kansas 85, Boston College 60. No contest here. It’s pretty amazing how good the top three teams are in the nation in regards to everyone else. Again, I won’t break down the Jayhawks until someone actually gives them a game, so there’s a nice photo next to this score. For the record, BC is now 10-3.
–No. 4 Washington State 56, Washington 52. WSU fans may start to cry, “Why aren’t you including us amongst the talk of all the great undefeated teams?” but the answer is in the outcome of this game. Many thought that the Huskies would give the Cougars a good game, probably not win, but give them a tight contest, and that appeared to be the case. I didn’t even a millisecond of the game, but the final score seems about right. Huge game from Brockman for Washington (17 rebounds) and Aron Baynes had 16 for WSU.
–No. 5 UCLA 70, California 58. So the Bruins have gone in the road twice in three days inside the conference and defeated two teams (Stanford being the other) who are likely to be dancing in a couple of months. Russell Westbrook, by the way, had an extremely fanatic dunk in this game that I’ll try and get on the site if I can track down the video for it.
–No. 6 Michigan State 65, Minnesota 59. A tall task to ask of Tubby Smith to go into MSU with this inexperienced Gopher team and get a win, but a six point loss isn’t too bad, either. Raymar Morgan had 31 points in the win. Man, a lot of players are reaching that 30-point total in games this year.
–No. 7 Georgetown 58, Rutgers 46. Caught a little of this game (I don’t think you get it…I did nothing all day but sit on a couch and watch as many sports games as possible.) and it was exactly what Georgetown wanted. They milked their offense to death against RU, who needs to improve their shooting tendencies, to say the least.
–No. 12 Texas A&M 79, Louisiana State 53. Just two things: LSU kind of stinks year and Billy Gillespie left the A&M job. OK, a third thing: The Aggies are 14-1; Wildcats 6-7.
–No. 14 Texas 81, Saint Mary’s 62. The game was close for a bit, but Texas ran away with it. The Gaels were outmatched defensively, but this could be a good growin’ up type of game for SMC. D.J. Augustin showed up like any point guard should (scoring 30 points, obviously), and Patty Mills of SMC was a non-factor in this game.
–No. 15 Vanderbilt 97, Massachusetts 88. Shan Foster, Vandy’s real ticket to making some noise this season, scored 32 points in the win. This was a back-and-forth game until about the 9:00 mark, when the Commies started to not believe in equality to all. (Eh, that was weak). Good effort by UMass on the road…boy a win here would’ve really skyrocketed the A10′s profile.
–No. 16 Butler 73, Valparaiso 65. Good win here for the Bulldogs. Valpo is a dangerous team, but Mike Green (the other half of Butler’s great backcourt) led the way: 24 points, eight boards, five steals and four assists. Great, great stuff from this dynamic team.
–No. 24 Stanford 52, Southern California 46. Lopez brothers weren’t the factors last night, nope, it was junior forward Lawrence Hill (right) who took down a baker’s dozen on the boards in helping Stanford to bounce back from the UCLA loss. Southern Cal, we’ll keep on waiting for you over at the Big Boy Table (Mayo led the team with a mammoth 14 point output).
–No. 25 Wisconsin 64, Iowa 51. Same ol’ story: Badgers will quietly waltz to a 22-25 win season, while few will really notice what they can do.
Notable:
Syracuse 89, South Florida 77. Orangemen (yes, I call them that) coming into their own.
New Mexico 99, Wyoming 92 (2OT). The Lobos are now 14-2. Start paying attention.
Arkansas 85, Baylor 78. No potential Top 25 appearance for the Bears, and it seems likely that the Hogs will have to wait as well. Both of these teams seem ideally fit for the slick bubble surface.
Illinois State 56, Southern Illinois 47. And that’ll about do it for CHJ’s talk of any sort of Southern Illinois-related basketball for this year.
Texas Tech 75, Texas-El Paso 68. Knight is one shy of 900. That’s pretty damn amazing. 900 wins…and probably three times as many death stares at poor saps in post game locker room lectures.
Notre Dame 73, Connecticut 67. UConn came all the way back from 21 points down. For a minute there, it looked a lot like the UConn team from last year, but they showed some gumption and fought back. Kyle McAlarney was big in the win: 32 points and everywhere his team needed him to be.
Gonzaga 75, Geoergia 67. Zags are another team that gets a win in a semi-big spot.
Maryland 76, Charlotte 72. Terrapins avoid a total meltdown with the W, Charlotte loses ground in the A10.
Sam Houston State 60, Central Florida 58 (OT). It took another five minutes of free ball to get the Bearkats to 12-1.

I know you said it in your Kansas-BC recap, but I can’t remember a year in which the top three teams were so separated from the pack. UNC, Memphis, and KU are almost sure to be No. 1 seeds, and I say that confidently this early in the season.
So solid, and I can’t decide who’s the best. A lot of people take Memphis as the #1 team due to their schedule, but I’ll stick with UNC given the eyeball test…and if they can beat Clemson handily tonight.
