Tracking the Unbeatens (Jan. 10)…
We almost made it an entire week, but Ole Miss fell last night to bring our number down to five teams left. I have to admit: I love it. I want it to last as long as possible. I’m a sucker for history and the longer more teams can go without losing, the better it looks. More importantly though: The more it will make March a surprise if upsets abound. For info on how the Rebels got beat, check out the “Around the Top 25″ post below. More about the five you already know on the other side.
North Carolina 16-0. Next two: Saturday vs. North Carolina State (11-3); Wednesday @ Georgia Tech (7-7). Last week I said…”This team has to tumble eventually…but Clemson seems too soon…February 3rd. Florida State. Road game.” So I’ve got that going for me, which is nice. It ends when? Mhm.
Vanderbilt 16-0. Next two: Saturday @ Kentucky (6-7); Jan. 17 @ Tennessee (13-1). Last week I said…”Do they fall in the home tilt against a possible A10 Tournament team in UMass? Nah, CHJ projects the January 12th game at Kentucky will be the first loss for the Commodores.” Looking nice! I’m far too kind to myself. It ends when? C’mon, people, keep up!
Kansas 15-0. Next two: Saturday @ Nebraska (11-2); Monday vs. Oklahoma (12-3). Last week I said…”But why not the game at Chestnut Hill? Maybe the Eagles get a good win there.” Uh…a 25-point win later, and I’m a bit of a fool. It ends when? Since I was so clairvoyant on the previous prediction, I guess I’ll stick to my guns and predict KU goes down in the coming week again! Nebraska’s improved, I like their chances, so let’s go with that.
Memphis 14-0. Next two: Saturday @ Marshall; Wednesday @ Rice. Last week I said…”Anyone taming the Tigers? Yes, it’s gotta happen eventually, but it should be interesting to see what they do against a Siena team that defeated the legitimate Stanford Cardinal. Memphis’ first test comes in a January 26th home game against a possibly overrated Gonzaga team.” Memphis blew the doors off of Siena and has the third or fourth-best C-USA team (not saying much, of course) in Marshall in two days. Might be a close 14-point win! It ends when? Want to see how Heytvelt and Gonzaga continue to grow before I can really claim them as the de-throners.
Washington State 13-0. Next two: Tonight @ Southern California (9-5); Saturday @ UCLA (14-1). Last week I said…”The tougher test will probably be the January 20th home game against Oregon. I smell upset there.” Was I in a drunken stupor (and is there any other kind of stupor?) when I wrote that? I clearly overlooked the UCK-LUH game on the road. It ends when? For the sake of my own dignity and word, I’ll take the Oregon game again.
Still winless! And yes, CHJ is giving a pass
N.J.I.T; 0-17 (Independent). Now this is what I like to see. Holy furious futility, Batman! I’ll resist giving them their own post until they get to 0-20. Next three games: Saturday vs. Columbia; Tuesday vs. Cornell; Jan. 19 @ Chicago State. Those teams have a combined record of 17-26, so it may not happen…here’s to hoping, though…
Grambling State; 0-9 (Southwestern Atlantic). They have now moved to a measly 0-9…seriously, what gives, guys? Is it a bigger indictment of GSU that they hardly scheduled any games this year because they knew they were going to suck? They play 25 games all season—that’s lightweight stuff considering the landscape of college basketball today. By the way, the SWAC is just GOD AWFUL. Combined record of all the teams? 30-99!
CHJ will keep an eye on all of these teams, and this feature will run on a weekly basis until the last team falls (or rises?).
