Upsets are for the weekends.
–No. 4 Washington State 73, Southern California 58. This is what WSU does to you: A 15 point defeat, and you don’t really know how you got down so badly. USC hung tight for a large part of this game and, in fact, it was a pretty low scoring affair for most of the game. Next thing you know, you’re getting a little lazy on defense and not hitting the boards hard enough, and Wazzu’s got ya. Recently ranked Southern Cal now sits at 9-6. They’re going to really have to move and shake to convince me that they should be anything above a 9-seed come March.
–No. 5 UCLA 69, Washington 55. Luc Richard Mbah a Moute had himself a nice ballgame (17 points) and Russell Westbrook (18 points) certainly were the protagonists for the Bruins. The Huskies had no chance on the road. Now it’s a quick turnaround for both UCLA and Washington State, which will have less than 36 hours until their game on Saturday.
–No. 23 Stanford 66, Oregon State 46. The Beavers stink.
–No. 14 Butler 74, Wisconsin-Green Bay 65. Matt Howard (get to know your Bulldogs) had 22 and 9. A stat that shouldn’t surprise you, but just might do it: Bulldogs are now 15-1 and really should be undefeated.
–No. 21 Wisconsin 70, Illinois 60. No contest her. Wisconsin looked in control the entire game—even when Illinois made their pushes—and can’t you just see the Badgers stealing a little bit of the Big 10 thunder from Michigan State and Indiana down the road? It could definitely happen due to the steady, take-it-as-you-can nature of this team’s play. Mistakes are unlikely to befall this team.
Notable:
George Washington 49, Saint Louis 20. And we thought it was bad when Savannah State only put up 25 against Kansas State earlier this week. The Billikens’ leading scorer had five points!! On the bright side, after a tame seven-point first half, Rick Majerus’ team exploded for a baker’s dozen in the final 20 minutes. It’s a “modern” (which means shot clock era) college basketball record for points in a game. In further depressing news for Saint Louis, they get Dayton this weekend.
Louisville 63, West Virginia 54. Tight game early, but Louisville looked damn good in this win. It’s clear the Mountaineers have lost their stroke from behind the arc and that’s not a good thing for them when you consider their lack of presence in the paint. Maybe the ‘Ville is getting its groove back? CHJ is not a believer yet.
Oregon 79, California 70. The Ducks get back on track in the past week here with some good Pac-10 wins. Cal might need to bolster that reputation if they want to keep pace in the Pac-10, though they had flashes of good play with their 20-6 run at one point.
Arkansas 76, Auburn 70. Don’t look now (OK, you can look now), but the ‘Backs (OK, no one calls them that) are 12-3.

I’m a little worried about USC, they look like a team for show than a team ready to handle a tournament. O.J. Mayo is a great talent, but when you watch him play he’s a bit of a show who you can tell is gonna bolt the minute the season is over.
At least Mayo hasn’t been too much of a ham for all the wrong reasons so far, which is relieving to see.
Mayo better get his Trojans in gear or else they’ll miss the postseason (0-3 in the Pac-10 right now).
Rick Majerus better get St. Louis in gear or else his dining hall meal plan will get suspended.
Haha – good call KDuffy. I was wondering if Norlander would take a shot at Majerus, but he let me down.
USC=clearly overrated.
