Tracking the Unbeatens (Jan. 17)…
Down to three. Here’s how Vandy and Washington State were booted from the club in the past week:
Vanderbilt; made it to 16-0. A double-OT thriller against Kentucky resulted in a 79-73 loss. The Wildcats, who seemingly caught magic in a bottle in a raucous Rupp Arena atmosphere, looked better than they had all season. The verdict: 79-73.
Washington State 13-0. made it to 14-0. Last week I predicted they’d get past UCLA and fall to Oregon this upcoming Sunday Well, heh, UCLA manhandled WSU last weekend, winning 81-74; it was an embarrassment, really. An onslaught of 3s (seven of them) kept the final margin a lot closer than the game really was.
An upcoming glimpse of what UNC, Memphis and Kansas have on their plates after the jump.
North Carolina 18-0. Next two: Saturday vs. Maryland (11-7); Wednesday @ Miami (14-2). Last week I said…”February 3rd. Florida State. Road game.” So I’ve got that going for me, which is nice. It ends when? Mhm. UNC has looked vulnerable, but they’ve been able to absorb the punches thrown by Clemson and Georgia Tech. Miami is a bit overrated, so we’ll be following the ‘Heels a little longer.
Kansas 17-0. Next two: Saturday @ Missouri (11-6); Wednesday vs. Iowa State (11-6). Last week I said…”Nebraska’s improved, I like their chances, so let’s go with that.” Whoops. Kansas continues to improve and keep the gap between them and Carolina practically nil. It ends when? Don’t concern yourself with such trivial matters this week, ‘Hawk lovers.
Memphis 16-0. Next two: Saturday vs. Southern Mississippi; Wednesday @ Tulsa (8-6). Last week I said…”Want to see how Heytvelt and Gonzaga continue to grow before I can really claim them as the de-throners.” Gonzaga game doesn’t arrive until January 26th, so continue to watch the traveling circus that is the Memphis Tigers.
Still winless! And yes, CHJ is giving a pass
N.J.I.T; 0-19 (Independent). One more game to 20 losses. I’ll reserve all mocking and satirical content until next week.
Grambling State; 0-11 (Southwestern Atlantic). The cumulative record of the SWAC is now PITIFUL 8-86 against D-I and they are dead last in conference RPI, obviously. I can’t take this anymore. I’m going to do a feature post on this garbage fire that is this conference. Spearheaded, of course, by the Grambling State Tigers.

As a KU Alum, I gotta say that I’m always a little worried about going to Columbia. Mike Anderson will have his squad fired up to try and knock of the Jayhawks and I honestly believe that Mizzou is the only squad in the Big XII North and possibly the BigXII as a whole that can score with them. Both teams average about 83 and change a game…

Seems as though the KU/’Zou games at Columbia are usually pretty riveting, but I’m expecting a real statement from this team this weekend. I’ll be in New York all weekend for the girlfriend’s birthday, but I really hope I can get to a tube for some of this game.
