Of all the bizarre things…I’m covering a high school basketball game last night, when I notice a familiar voice behind me talking about Super Bowl XLII. Who was it? Mike frickin’ Lupica. I’m sorry to report that he was nice and engaging in conversation.
–UPSET–Louisville 71, No. 16 Marquette 57. Two teams going in completely different directions. Louisville should probably have been ranked this week, but no worry there—it won’t effect their likely 5/6 seed. I really thought that Marquette was going to end up being a better team than this, but their size is definitely becoming more of a factor. Oh yeah, and Dominic James just can’t stay healthy.
–No. 5 Kansas 90, Missouri 71. Mizzou gets most of its players back after the nightclub suspensions, but still falls way short. Brandon Rush led the ‘Hawks with 19, while Mario Chalmers put up 15 tough ones to help Kansas continue to distance itself from the rest of the teams in the Big XII.
–No. 25 Saint Mary’s 89, Gonzaga 85 (OT). I tried to stay up and watch this whole thing, but succumbed to my weary eyes. Oh, how the roles have changed in the WCC this year. Gonzaga’s seven-year reign as WCC King is likely to come to an end. The Gaels get their second straight win at home over ‘Zaga, who only suffered their first conference loss, but is far from being a lock to be meaningful in March.
Notable:
Longwood 78, N.J.I.T 68. The highlanders lose a close one (for them) at home. They’re now a spectacular 0-24.
Saint Joseph’s 77, Villanova 55. The beat down in Philly means the Wildcats are all but done now. Joe Lunardi’s alma mater continues to allow the toupee’d Bracketologist to be giddier each week.

Gonzaga’s really not that good this year as it is. IF they even make the tournament they’ll be a first round out. Easily.
This just in >>>>>> Kansas is pretty good.
Gonzaga who normally is also a threat outside the conferance has four out of conferance loses. That does not sit will for them making it to the second wekend, if even to the second round.
Gonzaga is a good team they have 17 wins this season. Perhaps you discredit them because you fail to realize how good St. Mary’s is.
Look at Gonzaga’s losses this year
@ Memphis
Washington St.
Tennessee
Texas Tech
@ Oklahoma
and @ #23 St. Mary’s
They still have 17 wins and have one of the most under the radar freshman in the country Austin Daye and Jeremy Pargo is one of the best PG’s in the country. I’m not surprised that people underestimate Gonzaga because that is just their MO.
Also this was Gonzaga’s first conference loss.
