The Selection Show is just over 48 hours away. I know, I’m just as excited.
But, you’d better prepare yourselves for the weirdest ones yet, and that’s not just because of the ever-growing odd sexual tension between Greg Gumbel and Seth Davis. (Poor Clark must feel left out.)
I think we can legitimately make the argument that this might be the hardest year to select the most DESERVING teams, and how to seed anyone below the 4 line.
It’s been an interesting season. A season that has seen a lot of underachieving and a lot to be desired on the court from more than a few teams will see transform into a bizarre, unpredictable selection process in front of all of our eyes.
So don’t be shocked if the following things transgress around 6:20 p.m. on Sunday …
… Oregon (RPI of 56) is not selected, but Arizona State (81) is.
… Arizona (18-14) is selected to dance, but South Alabama (24-6) isn’t.
… teams like Illinois State and New Mexico sneak in through the back door, while someone like UMass or Baylor, who really only needed one more win, find themselves in the NIT.
 … Wisconsin is a 2 seed.
… Washington State is anywhere from a 3-6 seed.
… Kansas State is anywhere from a 6-10 seed.
… Texas is a 1 seed (this can happen if they win the Big XII tourney).
 … Kentucky is a 7 seed.
… West Virginia is a single-digit seed (with a win over Georgetown).
… The Mountain West and WCC send a combined six teams.
So let’s just prepare ourselves, because all the heads on the tube will be talking about mis-seedings, snubs and selection gaffes. (Dick Vitale, I know you’re ready.) It could get pretty crazy and nonsensical—let’s just accept that now.
