Scoreboard: Saturday’s Conference Tourney Results
America East championship:
No. 1 Maryland-Balitmore County 82, No. 2 Hartford 65. Unleash the hounds Retrievers!
Atlantic 10 championship:
No. 2 Temple 69, No. 5 Saint Joseph’s 64. It’s going to feel weird to not see Don Chaney on the sidelines for the Owls. Good job for Temple, who played well inside that chaotic A-10 this year. It’s nice to see them get the auto-bid.
Atlantic Coast semifinals:
No. 1 North Carolina 68, No. 4 Virginia Tech 66. No, Seth Greenberg, we are not “certifiably insane.” You are. Your team ain’t in. (And if they are, THAT when their should be an investigation.) Is Carolina prime for the picking against Clemson? You’d assume UNC is good for a 1 seed win or lose, so how much will they really give?
No. 3 Clemson 78, No. 2 Duke 74. A shame for Vitale, who would’ve loved to see one more light blue-dark blue game, but now Clemson could put themsleves into a 4 seed, maybe, if they get the ACC win. I think they’re more of a 5, but I wouldn’t say a word if they got the 4.
Conference USA championship:
No. 1 Memphis 77, No. 7 Tulsa 51. Regardless of UNC’s result, I think Memphis should be the No. 1 overall team. I will be rooting for them to reach the Final Four this year, despite the Joey Dorsey factor.
Big XII semifinals:
No. 1 Texas 77, No. 4 Oklahoma 49. Longhorns looked so good I couldn’t even watch.
No. 2 Kansas 77, No. 6 Texas A&M 71. Good showing by A&M, but this was destined to be a UT-KU final. I notice there’s the usual push for Kansas as the team-we-shouldn’t-forget-about this time of year.
Big East championship:
No. 7 Pittsburgh 74, No. 1 Georgetown 65. How about Pittsburgh. They were a 7 seed in the Big East tourney, but they’ll probably be a 5 in the actual Tournament. That’s what a nice run’ll do for ya. It’s Georgetown’s first loss in the Big East tournament as a 1 seed.
Big Ten semifinals:
No. 1 Wisconsin 65, No. 4 Michigan State 63. MSU has been up and down all year. They’ll beat someone by 30, then not crack 50 the next game. They had the Badgers on the ropes and led the entire game, until they needed to put them away. Wisconsin should be a 2 regardless of what happens tomorrow against…
–UPSET–No. 10 Illinois 54, No. 6 Minnesota 50. … Bleepin’ Illinois. Will Leitch can’t stand himself right now. You had to believe Minnesota had all the karma going with them after the transgressions against Indiana.
Big West championship:
No. 3 Cal State Fullerton 81, No. 5 UC Irvine 66. Only the second Tournament in the past 30 years for the Titans. (They last made it in 1978.) Always a fun Tournament when a Cal State school makes it.
Mid-American championship:
No. 1 Kent State 74, No. 3 Akron 55. Have to think that Kent State is going to win at least one game in The Tournament. They are the “dangerous” mid-major that’s not named Xavier (not a mid), Butler or Drake.
Mid-Eastern Athletic championship:
–UPSET–No. 7 Coppin State 62, No. 1 Morgan State 60. For those who hate conference tournaments due to the fact that they don’t give small schools their proper recognition and chance at a Tournament win … I give you 16-20, 264th-in-the-RPI Coppin State!
Mountain West championship:
No. 2 UNLV 76, No. 1 Brigham Young 71. A little surprising how easily UNLV ran away with this one.
Pacific-10 championship:
No. 1 UCLA 67, No. 2 Stanford 64. It’s always good when Gus Johnson is calling a game featuring one or two West coast teams.
Southeastern semifinals and quarterfinal:
–UPSET–No. 6 (E) Georgia 60, No. 2 (E) Kentucky 56 (OT). Now everyone is questioning Kentucky’s claim to The Tournament. But wait … didn’t all of those other schools that were below UK before the conference tourneys started lose as well? I’m not thinking Kentucky can even win a game in The Dance, but I can’t see them being left out. It could be a Syracuse situation though.
–UPSET–No. 2 (W) Arkansas 92, No. 1 (E) Tennessee 91. With the way Tennessee plays, I don’t think this hurts them. Sure this will cost them a 1, but maybe they make the Elite 8 anyway. Saving themselves a game of running up and down the floor will be good.
–UPSET–No. 6 (E) Georgia 64, No. 1 (W) Mississippi State 60. An incredible win given the circumstance … or did we overblow the difficulty of playing two games in one day?
Southwestern Athletic championship:
No. 2 Mississippi Valley State 59, No. 4 Jackson State 58. A close one that no one saw. First berth since ‘96 for the Delta Devils. That is the coolest name of this year’s Tournament.
Western Athletic championship:
No. 4 Boise State 107, No. 3 New Mexico State 102. First trip in 14 years for the Broncos. Game of the night, for sure. I didn’t want it to end! Give me five OTs! Well, even if N.M. State made it this year, we wouldn’t have had Reggie Theus’ hotness (uh, not my words) to patrol the sidelines. I see Boise State as a 14, but it is the WAC, so they could be rewarded with something better.
