Tyreke Evans: The Next Derrick Rose?

 evans.jpg

Allow me to be one of the first to pose the question that will surely become prominently asked as college basketball season perks up in early November. Looking at the crop of freshman that will hit college campuses across the country next season, it definitely looks inferior to what we’ve just seen in ‘07-’08.

Standing six-foot-four and already having carved out some muscle and a name for himself, Evans looks to be a step below Rose (no insult there), but has the ability to be POTY in C-USA. I’ve only seen him in NBA Wannabe Classic also known as the McDonald’s All-American game,  but he and Kid ‘N Play copycat Brandon Jennings looked damn good in that game. (Evans had 21, 10 boards and four assists in 24 minutes.)

Calipari may have missed his chance to get himself a national title, but while we wait on what CD-R will do and look at Memphis next year, Evans could have the potential to “carry” this team in some sort. Feels more like reload than rebuild at this position.

So we look to High School to see our upcoming College Freshman class, and we look to our College Freshman class to see our upcoming draft.

What if College Basketball had some type of draft? It might eliminate the dirty “friends of the program,” but make a lot of unhappy players and coaches.

Just saw Blue Chips again recently. I love that movie. You think most top prospects are given some other “means of compensation?” Or is it a definite, all top prospects do.

I’m not sure how much liberty coaches and programs have these days in order to give kids really big stuff (cars being the obvious thing that comes to mind), but I do believe a lot of these kids are receiving handouts of some sort. Having visited a couple of high-profile D-I campuses, I’ve seen athletes receive a few different kinds of special treatment.

And a college basketball draft would be awful for the sport, in my opinion. There’s already plenty of talk about how ridiculous college football signing day is … can you imagine any type of draft?

Payout exist anyone who says otherwise is naive. Being close to some college coaches, aau coaches, boosters, agents and runners, I know there are guys getting paid in college. Some more than others and it does impact recruiting heavily. The more you dig the more dirt you will find.

Anyways I’m not sold on Tyreke Evans. He will be a very good player for sure but I don’t think he is the next great player.
