Sad news out of Storrs, Conn. today — Jim Calhoun is undergoing his second bout with cancer in the past year.
Calhoun had surgery on his neck May 6, and is undergoing chemotherapy for a type of cancer known as squamous cell cancer. He had a malignant lump on the back of his neck, so while the issue wasn’t immediately life-threatening, it was halting.
The coach said he expects to be coaching in full form when the season starts, and the doctor at the press conference said that Calhoun was cancer free.
Calhoun’s 66, and his health has definitely been an issue in the past half-decade. He had a similar case of skin cancer on his cheek last year, and there was the case of the prostate cancer in 2003.
There have also been a couple of occassions that he’s missed games on short notice due to sudden illness. Perhaps the UConn adminstration needs to start thinking about a replacement coach within the next five years. Still, it’s good to see Calhoun recovering quickly.
A healthy blowup at the media is always encouraged, coach.
