I had no idea Nick Calathes was so much like my ex-housemate who preferred to sit in silence on the couch, let the hours go by and occupy his precious time with online gambling. Then again, he didn’t have much of a jumper.
A report from the Associated Press late last week (Yahoo! first got the scoop) is stating that Calethas racked up about $600 worth of gambling debt while trying to catch on the river. Or the turn. I don’t know; I jumped off that poker bandwagon about three years ago.
This story only has life because Calathes, unfortunately, fits the mold of a white kid with a good jump shot and a weird-looking mug who will now be ragged on by opposing crowds for the remainder of his college career. It’s important to know: Calethas did nothing wrong, but the story will still have a bit of a stigma to it. Where did the money come from?
A stingy man-to-man defense would be a welcomed challenge in opposition of whatever the SEC crowds will have in store for him this winter.
Worth noting: Teddy Dupay was kicked off Florida’s team in ’01 after he was busted for illegal gambling.
