Around the Top 25: Tuesday’s Results

I promise you that few other bloggers, writers, etc. will watch as much college basketball this season as I will. (Whether that is a good or bad thing, you decide.) I attribute this to my wonderful cable package (not even a dish!) that gives me every FSN channel, the Big Ten Network, the College Sports Network, all of the New York-area channels and more. For a big hoops dork like me, it was terrific to catch Arizona State this early in the season play against San Diego State; I wasn’t sure how good the Sun Devils were. (They look rough around the edges.)

But as I did last season with these morning-after recaps, my vow is to give you every Top 25 score plus another three to seven scores outside the rankings that have some significance. I will attempt to watch at least a little bit of whatever games are available to me to help deliver information, insight, an easy read and something you, as a college basketball fan, look forward to looking at each morning.

No. 12 Oklahoma 82, No. 21 Davidson 78. Stephen Curry is out to prove that no one can stop him. Curry brought this team back from the dead, scored a career-high 44 points (44 points!). A timely rebound by Blake Griffin with 30 seconds to go allowed Oklahoma to get to the free throw line and seal the game. I dont’ know if we learned much about either team, other than Davidson may not want to get so comfortable relying on Curry to bail it out of games. It will not earn its keep that way.

No. 1 North Carolina 77, Kentucky 58. Oh boy. Kentucky is looking like the same team it was about this team last year. Remember: The Wildcats did make The Tournament. I’ll have a post up on UK later today, so let’s talk Heels for a second. Without Ginyard and Hansbrough, the team looked really, really good. Hype, I believe you’ve been met. A 19-point win despite 67 percent from the foul line and 41 percent from the floor is a sign of good things to come for the kids in baby blue. In fact, I’ll be stunned if Carolina loses a total of five games this season. Important to note: Tyler Zeller hurt his wrist during garbage time of this game. Zeller appears to be the Hansbrough-in-waiting, but from the looks of the injury, he should probably miss at least two games. You’ll have an update here when word comes out.

No. 7 Texas 76, Tulane 51. Building a 17-point lead at halftime, the ‘Horns cruise.

No. 9 Gonzaga 80, Idaho 46. Bulldogs stole the game away from the Vandals within the first ten minutes.

No. 11 Purdue 78, Loyola-Chicago 46. A lot of Boilermaker doubters out there. Not sure if I’m one of them, but it could be a while before the verdict is out.

No. 14 Tennessee 91, Tennessee-Martin 64. Three bench players scored in double digits and two guys put up double-doubles. Bruce Pearl has stated that his team isn’t anywhere near ready for the tough schedule it would. Thirty-three point wins early in the season may be necessary for this club this year.

No. 15 Arizona State 59, San Diego State 52. San Diego State started off sizzling, but ASU fought its way back, as most Big Six schools do in such situations. James Harden picked up two big fouls within 40 seconds with about eight minutes to go in the second half, which ended up not hurting the Sun Devils. SDSU took some bad shots down the stretch, allowing ASU to pull away via free throws and breakaway opportunities.

No. 19 Southern California 73, New Mexico State 60. Taj Gibson with 23 and 10. Do you get the feeling that USC could have a better year without O.J. Mayo around? And that’s USC stud frosh DeMar DeRozan throwing it down. You will hear plenty about him over the next five months.

No. 24 Kansas 85, Florida Gulf Coast 45. Players and fans alike, they looked plenty ready to play last night.

No. 25 Wisconsin 88, SIU-Edwardsville 58. The Wisconsin Badgers hanging up 88? Quote me: This won’t happen two more times this season.

Notable:

Syracuse 76, Richmond 71. Considering it was in the Dome, ‘Cuse fans might be a little uneasy that it was such a tough game against the Spiders.

Indiana 60, IUPUI 57. Hoosiers only get a three-point win against IUPUI? Going to be a long year.

James Madison 62, Mississippi Valley State 54. The Delta Devils, who made The Tournament last year, are probably not going back: They’re off to an 0-4 start.

Boston College 82, St. John’s 70. Boston College should soon be on your radar. St. John’s? Not so much.

I’m glad to hear you’ll watch a lot of college basketball – I don’t have the time to watch lots of games, and I’ll look forward to your re-caps. Not to mention the fact that I’m an even bigger fan of NBA ball.

Whoa, there. Bigger NBA fan? Blasphemous!
