Around the Top 25: Saturday’s Results
Got our first snow of the season last night up here in Connecticut. A nice, light, fluffy one, too. Time to take the skis off the rack. Stratton, here I come.
—UPSET— Michigan 81, No. 4 Duke 73. Yes, Wolverine fans, it’s OK to start thinking about March already.
—UPSET— Ohio State 67, No. 7 Notre Dame 62. Thad Matta: proud to be, consistently, the most underrated coach in the nation.
No. 3 Pittsburgh 80, Vermont 51. Hurts me to see my hometown Catamounts go down so hard.
No. 5 Gonzaga 70, Indiana 54. Indiana has a .500 record right now (4-4). It will probably split two of its next four, then Big Ten play starts. I cannot envision this team getting to 12 wins.
No. 9 Purdue 90, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 42. The 48-point win won’t matter much; Duke’s loss to Michigan may put Purdue around 16 or 17 in the AP Poll come Monday.
No. 11 Louisville 83, Indiana State 43. I would not want to be participating in Rick Pitino’s practices right now.
No. 15 Wake Forest 81, Bucknell 52. Jeff Teague is so much bigger than his 6-2 frame. It’s silly, really. Better ACC player: Teague or McClinton? I lean Teague.
No. 20 Georgetown 73, American 49. Ho-hum.
No. 21 Miami (FL) 73, Kentucky 67. The ‘Canes tried and tried to give this game to the ‘Cats down the stretch (missing many a free throw), but Kentucky wouldn’t allow that to happen at home.
No. 22 Davidson 72, North Carolina State 67. Davidson seems like it will be able to handle the pressure again. Don’t underestimate how tough it will be for that team to make it through a tough gauntlet of a season. Hope to have a post on Curry’s night before I leave to watch the Bears game this afternoon.
No. 24 Baylor 58, Washington State 52. I stayed up to watch this one until its conclusion. Not an easy win for the Bears to get, but they held on to beat a Cougars team that was throwing punches. First road win in the Big 12/Pac-10 tilt Henry Dugat was the reason Baylor won this game, but also committed a bad foul and turned the ball over in the final minute.
No. 25 Marquette 61, Wisconsin 58. Golden Eagles got the home court in this one. Perhaps it was worth three points.
