Update: 6:35 p.m. ET: WHAS has reported that Calipari has accepted the job at Kentucky. WLEX has confirmed that report. It’s all over but the press conference.
Update, 3:43 p.m. ET: News is now starting to permeate that Memphis has asked permission to speak with Missouri’s Mike Anderson. That’s as much of a surrender outside of a direct quote from anyone that you could ask for right now.
A source from an Evansville, Ind., television station, Lance Wilkerson, just tweeted this: “I just got off the phone with a good source in lexington. He says he expects 4pm cdt announcement. more to come…”
The Lexington Herald-Leader is reporting that the contract for Calipari to sign should be off the printer any hour now, too.
The news has been filtering out so quickly this afternoon, it’s hard to keep up.
A source of mine — and this is penetrating message boards — has said that WHBQ in Memphis is reporting John Calipari has accepted an offer to leave Memphis for, who? What school is involved in all this? Something with a K? But nothing is official yet.
Earlier today, News Channel 3, a CBS affiliate in Memphis, reported that the school was OK with Calipari weighing his options.
Then, the ABC station broke a story that one Tigers player seemed pretty certain that Calipari was moving on to bluer pastures.
“Yes, we met with him. He was talking like he was going to leave,” was the quote from the player who attended this morning’s meeting.
The Fox affiliate in Memphis has a live feed of the building where, supposedly, this is all going down. The comments are an indictment on humanity. But if you’ve got time to kill, watch a gorgeous view of a closed door in the mid-afternoon Memphis sun!
Meanwhile, the Louisville Courier-Journal is throwing out this figure for Cal’s contract at UK: eight years, $32 million.
