Sporting News gave itself a nice little bump in publicity yesterday when it released its list of the greatest coaches across the sports landscape.
The list, which was “selected by a panel of 118 Hall of Famers, championship coaches and other experts” is peppered with many mentors from the men’s and women’s college game.
To be honest, I was pretty shocked Everybody’s Motivational Tool, Vince Lombardi, did not take the top honors (he took No.2). But Lombardi made it to 57; Wooden is still ticking at 98.
For me, the most notable thing to come from this was Neil Everett’s interview with Wooden. Only because Everett asked one of the pillars of college basketball how he’s dealing with knowing that death could be coming any day now. (Video below.)
Other college basketball coaches to make SN’s list: Dean Smith (No. 8), Pat Summitt (11), Bob Knight (16), Mike Krzyzewski (19), Adolph Rupp (21), Pete Newewll (31), Geno Auriemma (42), Hank Iba (47)
