Miles Brand, 67, died from pancreatic cancer this afternoon. Brand left Indiana University in 2002 to become the president of the NCAA.
Known for his strict way of legislation, Brand’s ultimate legacy will go down as the Man Who Fired Bobby Knight. His “zero tolerance” policy at IU led to Knight’s dismissal from the university at the beginning of this decade after a number of transgressions led up to the incident.
Saw Seth Davis’ interview with Brand on CBS earlier this year from the Final Four. In the interview he was a man with conviction and still plenty of diligence left in his blood. Pancreatic cancer is a quick death wish, unfortunately, and thoughts and prayers go out to those who were closest to him. The photos and videos of Brand in the past five years do all the detailing of the deterioration the horrible disease takes on the body. One of the NCAA’s good guys is gone too soon.
