Damion James has many likable qualities.
Before you start your day, please give this video a quick look. It’s the game-winning from the Harvard-William & Mary game. I always love when a tiny gym gets a thrilling finish.
No. 3 Texas 89, UC Irvine 42. The Longhorns opened the season with strong efforts from the two powerhouses. Damion James went for 21 and 15; Dexter Pittman 21 and 7.
No. 6 North Carolina 88, Valparaiso 77. Kinda close, no? Cause for a bit of concern for Heels fans? Just a bit, because after the 20-turnover performance at Florida International, the new guys in baby blue had 15 giveaways yesterday. But you know Valpo played tough because UNC was 40 percent from 3 and 56 percent from the field.
No. 8 West Virginia 83, Loyola 60. Where oh where was Devin Ebanks? He didn’t play, wasn’t on the team bench and Huggins refused to tell the press when he was expected to rejoin the team. He’s in the doghouse right now and only a handful of people know why.
No. 14 Washington 111, Portland State 55. Quincy Pondexter went for 29, his career high. Huskies have already played three games this season. Phil Nelson, who plays for Portland State and is a Washington transfer, had to deal with a rather sardonic student section last night. The boys and girls chanted, “Phil-is-angry” and “Phil-is-tired” among other things.
Notable:
Texas-San Antonio 62, Iowa 50. The Hawkeyes went 5 for 27 from behind the 3-point line and added insult to, well, insult following the Hawkeyes’ tough loss and bowl-game demotion at the hands of Ohio State in football Saturday night. Katz tweeted that Iowa will play in the CBE tournament next week with Texas, Pitt and Wichita State despite the loss. Why?
