Around the Top 25: Indiana’s program gets a big W on the big stage
No. 15 Georgetown 72, No. 22 Butler 65. The obvious: You want to see Greg Monroe play the way he did last night in every game of importance for the Hoyas this season. Never before had he scored 24 points or taken in 15 rebounds in a game. It was the big man’s third double-double of the season as well. The Bulldogs got the opposite kind of performance out of Matt Howard, who was 1 for 9 from the field. Brad Stevens is learning what it’s like to coach against so many worthy opponents. Up next, Ohio State. A game the Bulldogs can win. If they don’t, at-large chances will take a big hit.
No. 23 Texas Tech 80, TCU 70. The Red Raiders will be one of the teams featured in today’s breakdown of all those who made it exactly one month into the season without a loss.
Notable:
Brigham Young 81, Arizona State 68. You just don’t beat the Cougs in Provo, folks. This was a 13-point loss for the Sun Devils despite making eight 3′s in the second half.
Illinois 79, Vanderbilt 68. Reports are surfacing out of Champaign that the Commodores looked rather soft on the road. A common trend under Kevin Stallings.
Indiana 74, Pittsburgh 64. How about them Hoosiers smacking around a Pitt program that prides itself on toughness? How could you not feel good for the IU kids getting a win in Madison Square Garden? Also loved what I saw out of Jeremiah Rivers, the Georgetown transfer. Crean gets his 200th career win in a very memorable way.
Kansas State 71, Xavier 56. Feels weird to look at the standings eight games into the season and see Xavier with a 5-3 record. This program isn’t normally beaten by double digits on the the road.
Northern Iowa 67, Iowa 50. Yeah, not much you can make of here given the fact Hawkeyes coach Todd Lickliter was out because he was getting an artery in his neck repaired. Originally, he was complaining of a headache. Yikes. And the McLeod Center was at near capacity despite the fact Iowa is buried in more than a foot of snow at the moment.
