It was an ugly-looking Saturday. Let’s peel off a few layers here
It’s entirely possible no Saturday for the remainder of the season will feature as many top-25 teams in action as what we saw yesterday. Best game: UMass-Memphis, probably, though Old Dominion was determined to let the Hoyas linger. There were seven games postponed due to the weather, by the way.
—UPSET—Southern California 77, No. 9 Tennessee 55. And the Pac-10 gets its first win over a top-25 team. Got a buddy who is finishing up grad school at USC. The DAY he leaves, the Trojans win a big game. Heading out to L.A. in February to do some reporting, and I’m a little perky after seeing this team get a huge upset win. But why can’t Tennessee do anything out of conference? The Volunteers looked a lot like the team that fizzled out of The Tournament last March. You’re ranked top-10 in the country. You can’t fall by 22 and score less than 20 your average against a middling team. I smell a fraud. Bruce Pearl put some of the loss on newly eligible Mike Gerrity, but that is no excuse.
—UPSET—Old Dominion 61, No. 11 Georgetown 57. Hoyas played this one on campus in their packed, AAU-like gym and could not defeat the Monarchs, who will probably struggle to earn an NIT berth. So, in a word, huh? Maybe the preparation time wasn’t as hardcore for JT3 with finals and a week off between games.
—UPSET—Richmond 56, No. 13 Florida 53. The Spiders were happily flying under just about everyone’s radar. No longer. They get a win over a ranked opponent for the third season in a row. Meanwhile, the Gators have dropped two in a row after blowing a 13-point lead. Richmond will be featured in CHJ’s early-season surprises post later today.
—UPSET—Wichita State 71, No. 16 Texas Tech 65 .
No. 2 Texas 103, No. 10 North Carolina 90. Dexter Pittman had 23 points, 15 rebounds. The Tar Heels were outrebounded by 19. What we know: This UNC team cannot run like teams of the recent past. Kentucky, Texas and Syracuse have played Roy Williams’ game and beaten him at it. The Longhorns: How can you not love them? Rick Barnes ran with 13 bulls in this one and at no point did his team look out of sync, staggered or overmatched. Would be blown away if the burnt orange wasn’t a 1-seed. If there’s a storyline to take from the game, it’s the UNC angle. This team has showed enough reasons why it can’t and won’t defend its title this year.
No. 7 Duke 76, No. 15 Gonzaga 41. An affront to offensive basketball was the team that had “ZAGS” on the front of its jerseys. Mark Few’s club deserves to be knocked right out of the rankings after the rare, pathetic display it put on. And it’s kind of hard to ignore how strong Duke’s interior defense has become. The Plumlees and Zoubek are a brick-and-mortar group.
No. 1 Kansas 75, Michigan 64. Marcus Morris with 23 and 10 for the Jayhawks, who keep winning — but not yet over a top-25 team. Michigan lost its first game in program history to Kansas (it was 5-0). Kansas has now won 48 in a row at home, more than 20 games better than second-best Pittsburgh.
No. 3 Kentucky 90, Austin Peay 69. John Wall took a spill in this one. The crowd, apparently, was rather apathetic until said fall. But Wall will be OK. Can you believe THIS: Calipari is now the first coach in Kentucky’s history to start his career (not a season) 11-0.
No. 4 Purdue 69, Ball State 49. Boilers jumped out early and never looked back.
No. 5 Syracuse 85, St. Bonaventure 72. Game was too close for my buddy, who laid down some dough on Syracuse to cover. From ESPN’s research team: “Syracuse started the season unranked in the AP poll and has already climbed into the top 5. How rare is that? Over the last eight seasons, only two other teams have gone from unranked to the top 5 before Christmas: Georgia Tech in 2003 and Florida in 2005. Good news for the Orange: Both teams made it all the way to the national title game.”
No. 6 West Virginia 80, Cleveland State 78. The Mountaineers got a last-second layup from De’Sean Butler to escape on the road against a 4-8 team. What was it about yesterday’s games? A lot of teams seemed to be mired in a snow-affected funk.
No. 8 Villanova 96, Fordham 58. Too easy, but Fordham fought hard early on.
No. 12 Michigan State 80, Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne 58. MSU got to the foul line 25 times and made 80 percent of those shots.
No. 17 Kansas State 87, Alabama 74. When will we give this team some respect? Why do I feel like I’ll be asking that question again come President’s Day?
No. 18 Ohio State 60, Delaware State 44. This isn’t as heartless as it sounds, but Thad Matta couldn’t have asked for a better portion of his schedule to coincide with his best player’s back injury.
No. 19 New Mexico 66, Creighton 61. Lobos have a miserable shooting night (less than 30 percent) and still escape with a win — a sign of a really good team.
No. 20 Mississippi 108, Centenary 64. Centenary is on its way to becoming a D-III school. That’s the kind of thinking I can get behind.
No. 21 Butler 69, Xavier 68. Xavier owned the Bulldogs in the first half. They looked like the better team. The tougher team. The taller team. The hungrier team. Then, as Butler does all the time, it came back. Xavier will get its chance to get a few more wins in a multi-bid A10. From a mid-major perspective, the right team won this game.
No. 23 Texas A&M 71, The Citadel 50. Next game for the Aggies is …
No. 24 Washington 89, Portland 54. … against Washington. Could be a telling one. The shine has been completely removed from the Pilots and an ugly exterior is now showing. Huskies will keep the Pac-10′s 22-year streak in the Top 25 alive.
No. 25 Cincinnati 80, Lipscomb 52. Want to see Lance Stephenson step up and play the way he did against Lipscomb when he is put up against premier Big East teams.
Notable:
Temple 71, Seton Hall 65. And another one bites the undefeated dust. Is SHU a little suspect? If you think it is, can you put Temple in the Top 25 with this win? Does one lead to the other?
Massachussetts 73, Memphis 72. UMass had 21 second-chance points. Memphis had four. A .500 Minutemen team largely outworked and outhustled a Tigers team that didn’t take the snowy trip to Boston seriously enough. It was the first game UMass played at the Garden/Fleet Center/TD Banknorth since 1997. Here’s the best buzzer-beater of the weekend:
Louisville 102, Western Kentucky 75. The Cardinals found a team they could press against.
Oklahoma 80, Northern Colorado 79. Way too close for comfort. OU is looking like a team that will finish, at best, fifth in a tough Big 12.
Missouri State 73, Saint Louis 63. Give it up for your 10-0 Missouri State Bears.
Arizona State 55, San Diego State 52. Sun Devils eek out an ugly win at home. Man, West-Coast basketball is horrid this year.
Illinois State 73, Utah 63. Redbirds get off the schnide after two straight losses. Utah is not what it once was.
