If you read this site it means you follow college hoops with a FERVOR. (For that, I thank you.)
And with that fervor comes knowledge. So it’s no surprise to you that Kentucky is on the precipice of becoming the first team in the history of college basketball to win 2,000 games.
The school that has been to the Final Four 13 times, won seven national titles, won 25 SEC titles, has the best winning percentage (you’ll never guess who’s third) and had more bids (49) to the NCAA Tournament than any other team will likely turn Drexel into the answer of the trivia question, “Which team did Kentucky defeat in getting its 2,000th win?”
UK’s milestone will unleash the floodgates on the 2000-win territory in the next decade. North Carolina and Kansas, combined, have less than 20 wins to go, and Duke, Syracuse, Temple, St. John’s, UCLA, Notre Dame, Penn and Indiana could all join them by the end of the next decade.
But the team that was once known as the Cadets gets to pop the proverbial champagne first, and tonight will most certainly be the night it happens. Kind of cool: ESPN is sending Jamal Mashburn to do color for the game. I’m guessing Billy Gillispie and the 40 wins he put toward this record won’t be in Rupp tonight.
