Washington fell, somewhat inexplicably, to Oregon Saturday at home. It was 90-79. It was surprising. It was a bad omen at the beginning of conference play in a conference that is as weak as it’s been in a decade.
The Huskies, it’s still believed, are the best team in the Pac-10. But falling to Oregon — which doesn’t have a single non-conference win that’s worth a damn — at home will bring rightful criticism. Oregon, if you recall, didn’t even win 10 games last season.
Nearly 24 hours after the L, Huskies star Isaiah Thomas found his way to Twitter to get a few things off his chest. He doesn’t particularly care for negative response to negative play.
So let’s go over Thomas’ finger-frenzied meltdown from Sunday night. In chronological order:
When u lose everybody and there mom thinks they knw why u loss and its so crazy! (Seattletimes) and every other media outlet! Its jus funny!
Dude said “UW starters strolled on2 the floor like they were to coo for the conference” so if we won would u have said that! Not at all!!
(Thomas is referring to this column, written by the Seattle Times’ Steve Kelley.)
#tobehonest when u lose a game everybody turns on u except the TRUE fans! I love all the true fans out there. Media is jus badwagon jumpers!
#tobehonest the media loves u when ur doing good and HATES u when u slip up. they act all coo n ur face. Behind ur back there ur worst enemy
Hahaha I love the media there so TWO faced its crazy. Especially the 1s n ur own backyard. “Loss like this can wreck UWs season” like 4real?
Isiah Thomas once told me “The greatest players and teams have the shortest memory either its something GOOD or BAD” time 2 get back 2 work!
At the end of the day “Only god can judge me”
I love my DAWGS! I’m out 4 awhile.. Keep me n ur prayers and have a Blessed 1. Keep god 1st!
(That last tweet my be in reference to this.)
It’s good to see Thomas handle the criticism so well! Thomas doesn’t believe the team is too cocky? He may want to sidle up next to Quincy Pondexter and have a talk, then. Pondexter, a favorite at here at CHJ, said this team’s attitude may need to be put into check.
“I do sense that sometimes. I guess because I don’t have that .. with me I’m just … I don’t know how to explain it. … (sigh) … Oh man. … It’s one of those things where I’m not like most of those guys. We all have different personalities on this team. I wouldn’t say it’s a problem or anything, but that’s how those guys are. They carry a chip on their shoulders. With some of them like Venoy. He has a lot of intensity and that’s his character.”Maybe we got a little bit ahead of ourselves in the cocky standpoint. We need to be a lot better on the court before we try to have a flamboyant style.”
(Have you talked to them about that at all?) “You cant … It’s their personality. It’s not necessarily them. I think a lot of teams have the same feeling. A lot of guys are just different. Right now I know the next game they won’t be that same attitude because we did lose to Oregon.”
Pondexter was also quoted in this article as saying Washington didn’t come to play with any passion.
Looks like Lorenzo Romar has a bit of wrangling to do in the locker room. It’s not coming apart at the seams by any means yet, but now we’ve got an interesting storyline with a team that’s actually playing meaningful games in the Pac-10.
Washington could fall out of the Top 25 polls today. If it did, and Oregon and/or Cal don’t squeeze in, it will be the first time since 1987 the Pac-10 didn’t have a ranked team.
