Around the Top 25: Jarvis Varnado goes for the block-variety triple-double
No. 9 Tennessee 81, Auburn 55. Tigers were outscored 43-18 in the second half. Yikes. Interesting to hear Rece and Hubert Davis on the call last night. They don’t do too many games.
No. 11 Georgetown 85, Seton Hall 73. Witness the bad side of Jeremy Hazell. He was tempered for a large part of the game, and if you watched the game, first of all, good for you, but you saw how lost the Pirates can be. Hazell was scouted perfectly by Georgetown, which spread out its offense and got four players to score in double digits. Greg Monroe was not one of those players.
No. 17 Gonzaga 89, St. Mary’s 82. Gonzaga has won five in a row and 25 of its last 28 against the Gaels. Will the Bulldogs lose a game in the WCC this year?
Notable:
Arizona State 76, Oregon 57. The Sun Devils are now 13-5 and looking like the best team in the Pac-10. I’m sure someone else’s turn will be up within a week, though.
Mississippi State 82, Arkansas 80. Varnado moves ahead of Tim Duncan to slide into third place all-time in NCAA history in blocks. Man is probably the most underrated player in college basketball in the past five years.
Louisiana Tech 81, Fresno State 73. LaTech is up to 17-2 and is now growing larger on your radar screen.
California 93, Washington State 88. Cougs have hit their swoon, lost three of their last five. At 3-1, Cal leads the Pac-10.
Washington 94, Stanford 61. At one point last night I watched Washington blow a two-on-one breakaway with two missed layups and brick an alley-oop on the subsequent possession. It was Pac-10 basketball at its 2010 best.
