Around the Top 25: Pitt loses its first Big East game
—UPSET—North Carolina State 88, No. 7 Duke 74. The ACC race is officially a mess. Duke is 3-2 and two games behind Virginia in the loss column. Duke has a road issue: It’s 0-3 in true games this season. Duke was the highest scoring team; N.C. State was the lowest and hadn’t won at home yet in conference. What a weird result. And just when Blue Devils fans were ready to boast and brag to their neighbors down the road.
—UPSET—Wake Forest 82, No. 24 North Carolina 69. Then again, UNC’s got some real issues. You’ve probably heard the news: North Carolina is now enduring its first three-game losing streak under Roy Williams. I feel I’ve exhausted all there is to talk about with North Carolina, though.
No. 3 Kansas 81, No. 25 Baylor 75. Good for Baylor. I didn’t expect it to win in Lawrence, but I did want to see my suspicions debunked. The Bears looked good in a tough environment, and with three minutes to go, this game was a toss-up.
No. 12 Georgetown 74, No. 9 Pittsburgh 66. Chris Wright is an awesome player, and quickly moving up the list of the most underrated in the country. He had 27 last night in one of the best road wins Georgetown could ask for. Pitt was gonna get clipped in conference eventually, and there’s no shame to losing to G’town. Hoyas now the second program to win two games at the Peterson Events Center, with Louisville being the other.
No. 4 Villanova 94, Rutgers 68. Another NYC-metro-area team failing to resemble anything close to a worthy opponent. Villanova smushed ‘em.
No. 6 Michigan State 70, Iowa 63. Really? Only a seven-point win at home, Sparty?
No. 11 West Virginia 68, Marshall 60. Backyard kinda battle here, and the Thundering Herd would’ve really made my night if they’d been able to pull the upset. Marshall freshman stud Hassan Whiteside had a tame game, only putting up 18 points and six rebounds. It’s a victory for WVU in another sense: Marshall’s a high-scoring team, and to keep them to 60 isn’t easy. But WVU continues to flirt with danger.
No. 14 Brigham Young 81, Wyoming 66. If BYU can turn you over more than 15 times, you’re probably not going to have the ability to rebound with them enough to makeup for that difference.
No. 16 Temple 77, Xavier 72. Xavier’s got issues. Temple’s good, but Xavier’s got issues. X is 12-6 and has to really run game in the A10. I think three more losses would be too much to overcome. I’m aware this was just the first loss for the Muskies in the conference, but the mid-major pool is more crowded this season.
No. 18 Wisconsin 54, Michigan 48. Looks like I missed some classic Big Ten ball here.
No. 22 Mississippi 66, South Carolina 57. It’s a shame I’m only going to get to see Mississippi three, maybe four times before the SEC tournament. It’s never on TV. I know less about this team than any other Top 25 club.
Notable
UTEP 72, Memphis 67. UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE. The winning streak was one game shy of the NCAA record, and the record will remain at 65 games. For the first time since March 2, 2006, Memphis loses a Conference USA game. Jeremy Williams went back home to Memphis and helped the Miners in a big way. What really did Memphis in? Turning the ball over on four of its final six possessions.
Charlotte 71, Richmond 59. The Spiders are going to be a team with a great non-conference resume that didn’t win enough in the A10 to earn a bid. It’s doomed to a sad tale, for certain.
DePaul 51, Marquette 50. The streak is over! DePaul wins its first Big East game in 24 tries. DePaul’s first lead was its only lead and the game’s final score. Shooter by the name of Mike Stovall hit a shot with .7 remaining to give the Blue Demons the win. Golden Eagles kill all at-large hopes with this loss.
Virginia Commonwealth 81, William & Mary 59. And the Rams leapfrog the Tribe. Damn, what a bad, bad loss. At least keep it close, Bill and Mary.
Connecticut 75, St. John’s 59. Nothin’ but a couple of 12-6 teams is what we got here. More on this game at The Dagger.
