Five worthwhile results from yesterday. Yep, and UNC lost again.
No. 3 Syracuse 71, Cincinnati 54. You look at the score and you’re probably not surprised. Funny thing is, Cinci had control of this game for the first 30 minutes. SU finished on a 28-5 run. Kris Joseph, who will prove to be big in a Big East tournament or Tournament game before this is all said and done, had 17 off the bench. Wesley Johnson, still stiff from his fall in the Providence game, only had five points but played 26 minutes. Bearcats are 14-9 and won’t be appearing in Dancing on the Bubble later today.
No. 13 Ohio State 68, Iowa 58. Thirty-two, seven rebounds, five assists. Each game that passes is another reason why Evan Turner is clearly the player of the year. I’ll write a 2,000-word diatribe if this man is jobbed. What was most impressive about Ohio State yesterday: The team arrived at the gym at 7:45 a.m. for the noon tip. Iowa is terrible. Like that team’s resolve.
Notable:
Notre Dame 65, South Florida 62. An absolutely huge game for the Fighting Irish, as they get the season sweep of USF. I have a feeling that’s going to really come into play in three weeks, when both teams’ resumes are pretty close. Luke Harangody was almost a goat in this one, as he fouled Jarrid Famous on a dunk with 10 seconds remaining. Famous missed his free throw, Notre Dame got the win after ‘Gody sank two free throws and Dominique Jones’ running 3 at the buzzer found iron. Tory Jackson keyed ND, but if you saw the game, you couldn’t avoid him finding the cameras and pointing to them. Obnoxious.
Maryland 92, North Carolina 71. The snow was cleared, the building was at near-capacity and Maryland treated North Carolina like a mean stepsister. Greivis Vasquez is now clearing trying to win the ACC PotY. He had 26 and 11 rebounds. Terps stayed hot, shooting better than 50 percent, and didn’t let UNC ever get a lead. Heels are now only a half-game out of last place in the ACC. They have given up. Plain and simple. Is Harrison Barnes regretting his decision right now?
Northwestern 78, Indiana 61. I guess the photo of Tom Crean says it all.
