The w
riting was on the wall over the weekend, and it’s looking like Oregon won’t even get to finish a game before all of this becomes a formality.
According to the Oregonian, Ernie Kent gathered the troops around his lap yesterday and told the team he’d be leaving at season’s end.
“It’ll be important for us to get out on the road,” Kent said, “because I think it’ll be a little bit better for them to kind of drown out the noise, and they’ll come together a little bit more.”
Now that the players know Kent is wrapping up his 13th and final season at Oregon, as a source has told The Oregonian, will they be on a mission to extend Kent’s Oregon career and that of leading scorer and team MVP Tajuan Porter? Or will they go quietly at the hands of the Cougars as they have in each of the previous two seasons?
I do wonder how Oregon will respond. I’ve got nothing against Kent, and although he hasn’t been as consistent as Ducks fans want, I do think two Elite Eights is acceptable.
How great would it be if Oregon flirted with winning the Pac-10 tournament this week? These things happen. If a coach is that close to his players and a few breaks go their way, we could have a cool little story.
Or this could all end as quickly as UConn’s season did. Let’s not forget just how bad OU has looked at times this year.
