Virginia Tech locks up Greenberg for 6 years

St. John’s strikes out again.

Virginia Tech remained dedicated to being a bubble team for the next six years by extending Seth Greenberg’s contract two more (isn’t that a little odd?) and, more importantly, giving him a raise. Meanwhile, the Red Storm continue to look for a coach.

What’s interesting about this contract is how badly Virginia Tech must want to keep Greenberg around; he just re-upped his deal with the school less than two years ago.

The angry bald man who isn’t Tony Kornheiser will keep his post in Blacksburg, and Va. Tech AD Jim Weaver did not release specifics on the contract, though it’s believed we’ll know the details by the night of the championship game. Prior to this renegotiated deal, Greenberg was making 950K, and that’s believed to be one of the smallest, if the not the smallest, amount for an ACC coach.

The news was released by the school yesterday.

“I am pleased that Coach Greenberg will continue his mission at Virginia Tech and will lead the Hokies for the next six seasons,” Weaver said. “He has done an outstanding job in creating a program and environment that has the Hokies competitive year in and year out in the ACC. Under Coach Greenberg’s tutelage, the Hokies have the fourth-best regular season record in the ACC and he has created one of the best programs in the country.”

The move seems like a one based on faith. Greenberg has kept Virginia Tech competitive in the ACC, though it must be noted the ACC has gone through a dip in the past five seasons. With Malcolm Delaney supposedly returning alongside four other starters, the Hokies will certainly be a preseason Top 25 team.

Greenberg is 132-94, and the argument could be made he only had one really good season, 2007, when he reached the second round of the NCAAs. Good move?
