And he had front-row seats. Duke fans come through with one of the better stories from Saturday, and another clever twist to the rivalry.

Tunes and Teams Tuesday: Follicles and foils

The concept is simple: take a song’s title or meaning and relate it to a storyline or team in college basketball today. Let’s get to it. Your suggestions are welcome: editor@collegehoopsjournal.com Matt Bouldin and Steven Gray / Pavement, “Cut Your Hair” The story: Rob Dauster (the guy has such a friend-you-knew-in-college name) over at Ballin' is a Habit put together a nice list of follicle-loving players. Two birds with one back

Two birds with one back

I'm not much of a tattoo guy, but this is dedication I can get my arms around. In celebration of two titles in two decades, someone — I have no idea if this is a man or a woman— got tatted up with some pretty impressive Kansas Jayhawks artwork. Only beef with the ink: Why'd they have to ruin it with the chinese symbols? I do approve of going with actual ... Read More

Toothless Cousins fits right in at Kentucky

Toothless Cousins fits right in at Kentucky

No need to be offended: the fans are saying it, too. DeMarcus Cousins lost a couple of chompers during Kentucky's 101-70 win over Arkansas Saturday. (And, supposedly, the game wasn't even that close.) For as much of a character John Wall has been, Cousins is the guy who makes the makeup of this year's UK team all the more fun, quirky and engaging. Frank Martin discovers access to his soul through a fake beard

Frank Martin discovers access to his soul through a fake beard

There is a new meme in college basketball: Jacob Pullen's beard. Pullen only recently began growing out his facial follicles, but the beard, which isn't anything amazing (this is blasphemous to KSU faithful, I know) is catching on with the student body in Manhattan. Winning and a good gimmick can go a long way in a secluded college town. Consider me on beard — er, board. Props to Frank Martin, who soaked in ... Read More

UNC’s bus sets a mean pick

UNC’s bus sets a mean pick

Kind of an ominous sign for Carolina road to the Final Four, right? (Dodges tomatoes.) Larry Drew No. 2 (must send request to follow on Twitter) put up a photo from his phone a few minutes ago detailing either some red-faced Clemson fan on a mission (UNC plays at Littlejohn Coliseum tonight) or, more likely, a fool too busy checking his cell phone to pay attention to a 10-ton-pound vehicle creeping out ... Read More

Well, this is about the saddest coaching photo you’ll see

Jerry Wainwright was let go by DePaul yesterday, as you know. What you might not know is Wainwright had his legs taken out from under him by a player in the last game before he had his legs taken out from under him by his athletic department. That incident led to the most devastating photo involving a coach you may see all year. The photo above brings to mind the sad scenario ... Read More

And here is the coaching photo of the year

Temple's Fran Dunphy got the win of the weekend when his Temple Owls upset third-ranked Villanova. It's because of that win that CHJ can participate in a bit of schadenfreude with this photo. The Philadelphia Inquirer knows exactly what its doing by tempting us heathens when it uploads this kind of shot into a slideshow. ... Read More

From left we have Vince Carter, Julius Peppers, Makhtar Ndiaye (who?) and Antawn Jamison. This was taken last night at the national title game. Which smile do you prefer the most? Hasheem Thabeet Can’t Seem to Blend Into the Crowd

The shades say it all. This cat is on his way to the NBA and will be leading one of the most unintentionally hilarious lifestyles off the court. Give it up to the dude, though. He soaked in Detroit for all it was worth and watched UNC run roughshod on MSU last night. Or maybe the glasses belonged to the beauty on his left. Nah. I don't think so. ... Read More

Hasheem Thabeet Steals Trophy, Gleefully Escapes

AP photographer Chris Carlson was able to take this snapshot of Connecticut center Hasheem Thabeet fleeing the scene with a giddy-up in his step as the Tanzanian terror near the rim got lost in the bowels of University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale yesterday after UConn defeated Missouri for the right to go to the Final Four. Thabeet dodged stadium security, innocent bystanders and the wrath of Jim Calhoun before passing ... Read More

Goins’ groin shot on Cousins

Goins’ groin shot on Cousins

Published On Saturday, March 13th 2010

I get the feeling SEC coaches have purposefully gone after Cousins to try and get him to snap. That's not to say I think Bruce Pearl directly told Goins, "Hey, if you get a chance, throw a fist into DeMarcus' crotch," but I don't think coaches have shied away from telling their team that he's a hot head who will crack if you give him reason to.

Another weak, only-verbal punishment, this time handed out by the WAC

Another weak, only-verbal punishment, this time handed out by the WAC

Published On Wednesday, March 10th 2010

You know, I'm not saying we have to fine coaches every time or make them sit out a game, but now we're starting to see a bit of an unwanted pattern with coaches being "punished" by way of a short-but-sweet press release put out via said coach's conference Web site.
