Texas and Kentucky tease the losing scenario, escape late with identical 72-67 victories

Texas and Kentucky tease the losing scenario, escape late with identical 72-67 victories

It was a wild Saturday, and while you could pick six or seven results as the headliner, I'll go with the top two, the only undefeated teams left, nearly falling. First, Texas. The Longhorns are beginning to wobble. They never led until overtime of their 72-67 win over 12-5, underrated Texas A&M. Damion James, he who had 26 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks, including a swat that thwarted A&M's chance to ... Read More

Saturday recap brings news of some strong one-loss teams, Kansas impressing us all and a pathetic Pac-10

Saturday recap brings news of some strong one-loss teams, Kansas impressing us all and a pathetic Pac-10

Let's get right to it. Syracuse falling by 10 at home to Pittsburgh, 82-72, was probably the biggest story of the day. While at the URI-Oklahoma State game, people's reaction of this was a collective double-take. Syracuse fans, some of the most pessimistic-yet-righteous fans of all, actually want to lay blame on the officials for this one. Kansas made the biggest statement Saturday. Temple likes to keep the points low, it just ... Read More

Early-Season Surprises

Early-Season Surprises

What surprises you? Each year, the unexpected happens in one capacity or another, so what really curls your ear or crooks your eye? Hopefully, I've got a few things listed below that will do one or the other. Though the ear thing is a bit harder over the Internet. Have you been paying attention to hoops closely, or are you now just starting to visit sites like this one because college ... Read More

Exactly one month into the season, we’re tracking the unbeatens

It's time. CHJ has its radar locked one of the more intriguing storylines of the college basketball season: Who will go the longest without losing a game? Exactly one month ago the college basketball season started. Can you believe we've already advanced that far?

Tracking the Unbeatens (Dec. 4)

Yep. Not even a month into the season and CHJ is going to pick back up on one of the more intriguing storylines of the college basketball season: Who will go the longest without losing a game? Last year the last club to fall was, of course, Memphis, who took a single digit into the loss column on Feb. 23 when they couldn't knock out Tennessee at home. (Kansas and ... Read More

Tracking the Unbeatens (Feb. 1)…

We didn't go one straight week this entire season without at least one previously undefeated team losing—subsequently shortening the group. We're left with Memphis, who has (in my eyes) about a 40 percent chance of making it through the regular season unblemished. Memphis 20-0. The Tigers are the last team with the bagel. If you had to guess any team that would be the last standing as undefeated, wouldn't you have picked ... Read More

That's the freaking sun, man. It signifies just how hot Kansas and Memphis are, dude. In case you missed it: North Carolina; made it to 18-0. A somewhat stunning home loss to Maryland last Saturday, 82-80, eliminated UNC from the club. Ultimately the loss will mean zilch; it'd be hard for the Heels, with all of their talent, to play themselves out of a 1-seed. Just two: Kansas 19-0. Next two: Saturday vs. ... Read More

Down to three. Here's how Vandy and Washington State were booted from the club in the past week: Vanderbilt; made it to 16-0. A double-OT thriller against Kentucky resulted in a 79-73 loss. The Wildcats, who seemingly caught magic in a bottle in a raucous Rupp Arena atmosphere, looked better than they had all season. The verdict: 79-73. Washington State 13-0. made it to 14-0. Last week I predicted they'd ... Read More

Tracking the Unbeatens (Jan. 10)…

We almost made it an entire week, but Ole Miss fell last night to bring our number down to five teams left. I have to admit: I love it. I want it to last as long as possible. I'm a sucker for history and the longer more teams can go without losing, the better it looks. More importantly though: The more it will make March a surprise if upsets abound. ... Read More

When last met, the list of yet-to-be-blemished squads had been cut squarely in half from 28 to 14. Now, in Two Thousand Aught Eight, there are all of six teams remaining without donning defeated laundry after the buzzer. (Here's the link to the last entry on December 14th.) Here's how the last eight got knocked off and how... Georgetown; made it to 8-0. Everyone knows—the Memphis game, yeah, yeah, yeah. ... Read More

When last met, there were 28 teams that had not experienced the "agony" of defeat. Of course, two weeks later, that number has been cut squarely in half, going down to 14. Here's the first 14 that got knocked off and how... »Wright State; made it to 2-0. What happened then? They fell the very night of the first appearance of this column (Dec. 1), losing to Marist, 79-64. »New Orleans; made ... Read More

Tracking the Unbeatens…

December has just begun, and CHJ is going to start a new feature entitled "Tracking the Unbeatens..." in which, well, you get the idea already. I'm not quite sure which team is going to last the longest, but I'm hoping someone can make it to February so that I can keep this shtick up for as long as possible. This segment will run again on December 15th, and again in ... Read More

Goins’ groin shot on Cousins

Goins’ groin shot on Cousins

Published On Saturday, March 13th 2010

I get the feeling SEC coaches have purposefully gone after Cousins to try and get him to snap. That's not to say I think Bruce Pearl directly told Goins, "Hey, if you get a chance, throw a fist into DeMarcus' crotch," but I don't think coaches have shied away from telling their team that he's a hot head who will crack if you give him reason to.

You know, I'm not saying we have to fine coaches every time or make them sit out a game, but now we're starting to see a bit of an unwanted pattern with coaches being "punished" by way of a short-but-sweet press release put out via said coach's conference Web site.
