How UConn and Calhoun can move on and win over media, fans and recruits

How UConn and Calhoun can move on and win over media, fans and recruits

Have you ever been in one of those relationships where it's clear it needs to end eventually but you just don't feel like it has to end in that moment, that day, that week? Long-term, you know he/she isn't the answer to your quest for lifelong happiness, but, damn, things are just fine now, and you'd rather have The Breakup Talk at a different time. More than anything, you don't want to ... Read More

BREAKING: Calhoun to go on medical leave of absence

BREAKING: Calhoun to go on medical leave of absence

Is this a shocker? I don't think so. Connecticut, which is in the midst of one of its toughest regular-season campaigns in 20 years, just lost its head coach for an undetermined amount of time/games. Again. To health reasons. Again. I wrote last year that Calhoun should stay. Now, I'm not so sure. And it's unclear whether or not Calhoun will be back this season. Here's Connecticut's statement in full on the matter: University of Connecticut Head Men's Basketball ... Read More

UConn’s issues all coming to a head, and Jim Calhoun may be ready to burst

UConn’s issues all coming to a head, and Jim Calhoun may be ready to burst

For as impressive as Pittsburgh looked last night in getting its third straight road win, I'm going to have to pay more attention to the train that may be ready to come off the tracks.

Jim Calhoun to Stay at UConn

Jim Calhoun to Stay at UConn

Looks like Calhoun did us all a favor and decided to do what's best for his program and college basketball. Originally, it was believed Calhoun might leave administrators and players twisting in the wind for a couple months before deciding what he would do, but that won't be the case. In a statement, Calhoun announced late yesterday that he'll be back next year to have his arms folded and look disgusted ... Read More

Even Though He’s a Grump, Calhoun Shouldn’t Retire

Even Though He’s a Grump, Calhoun Shouldn’t Retire

Now that UConn's season has come to an end, the speculation will begin about Jim Calhoun's future. What should he do? He's a coach who's already in the Hall of Fame. He's won two national titles. He built the program at Connecticut. Hell, you know it: he is the program at Connecticut. Will he retire? And if he does, is he really going to retire over alleged illegal phone calls to one recruit? ... Read More

What in the Name of God is Happening With UConn?

UConn is doomed this weekend. Two nuns who had accompanied the team in its previous to trips to the Final Four won't be hopping on the bird this time. Mainly Jean-Louis Taurun (like you don't know) will be in town from the Vatican. Mother Vergauwan and Sister Richards will remain here to receive a visit from Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, who is arriving from the Vatican to speak at Boston College. Two ... Read More

Just in Time for the Sweet 16: Looks Like UConn Committed a Few No-No’s

Yahoo! Sports has broken the investigative piece that claims recruitment of a former prospect, Nate Miles, was littered with NCAA violations for two years (2006-08).The story is now just starting to pick up speed, and will surely be the off-the-court discussion over the next four days. And you thought Jim Calhoun going to the hospital last week was a distraction. Miles was provided with lodging, transportation, restaurant meals and representation by Josh ... Read More

Calhoun Lashes Back at Clueless Reporter with an Agenda

Calhoun Lashes Back at Clueless Reporter with an Agenda

A freelance reporter decided to bring a political agenda to a post-game presser after UConn dismantled South Florida today. Calhoun can be a grouch, but he's completely in the right here. Hey, at least something exciting can be taken away from that game. That aside, I'm hoping I can get press access, like last year, to the Big East tournament in a couple of weeks. I want to go there to report ... Read More

The Battle For 767

The Battle For 767

I really implore you to catch the UConn-Syracuse tilt tonight. The teams appear to be on an upswing and—this is ridiculous—both Jims are tied with 766 career wins! It all comes to a head tonight, when they coach against each other in a scenario that will probably never be duplicated by any other two coaches. The comparison graphic for television has already been made up in the ESPN production truck, ... Read More

No Dys(on)

No Dys(on)

Seems I've got a few things to put up today, but I thought I'd inform you of Calhoun's decision to bench Jerome Dyson another 30 days for failing one of those silly drug tests. If you're interested, link's below. The much less important Doug Wiggins is back in practice garb, though. "I'm not happy about anything other than we've won four in a row," Calhoun said in a brief phone conversation ... Read More

UConn’s Bid For a Perfect Season Comes to an End

UConn’s Bid For a Perfect Season Comes to an End

That was quite an interesting game to watch. After the Huskies recovered from their early-game lashing that they were receiving, they actually recovered and took the lead heading into halftime. Unfortunately for cancer survivor Jim Calhoun, this was not his night. No, the Tigers were much superior from an athletic standpoint and the Derrick Rose/Chris Douglas-Roberts combo was just way too much for the Huskies to handle. Memphis walked ... Read More

Two Nationally Relevant Teams Will Play Each Other Tonight

Two Nationally Relevant Teams Will Play Each Other Tonight

Those two dapper gentlemen feature above are, of course, John Calipari and Jim Calhoun. Their Memphis and Connecticut teams will face each other tonight at approximately 8:30 ET on ESPN2. Although UConn isn't currently ranked, a win over Memphis would certainly vault them into the Top 25. I'm just hoping for a lot of up-and-down tempo and for Vitale to bust a gasket. I guess those two things are guaranteed. ... Read More

Goins’ groin shot on Cousins

Goins’ groin shot on Cousins

Published On Saturday, March 13th 2010

I get the feeling SEC coaches have purposefully gone after Cousins to try and get him to snap. That's not to say I think Bruce Pearl directly told Goins, "Hey, if you get a chance, throw a fist into DeMarcus' crotch," but I don't think coaches have shied away from telling their team that he's a hot head who will crack if you give him reason to.
