Brady Morningstar’s failed attempt to revolutionize the foul shot

Brady Morningstar’s failed attempt to revolutionize the foul shot

What shall we call it? Perhaps, premature shot-rotation? Morningstar, the sharp-shooter for Kansas, went to the line last night for a shot after a Damion James foul, which came before Cole Aldrich and Damion James got into a tiff, resulting in a technical foul on Aldrich. James fouled Morningstar right before the TV timeout. But none of that matters. What does matter is we now have another proven way on how to ... Read More

Two birds with one back

Two birds with one back

I'm not much of a tattoo guy, but this is dedication I can get my arms around. In celebration of two titles in two decades, someone — I have no idea if this is a man or a woman— got tatted up with some pretty impressive Kansas Jayhawks artwork. Only beef with the ink: Why'd they have to ruin it with the chinese symbols? I do approve of going with actual ... Read More

Tunes and teams Tuesday

Tunes and teams Tuesday

I debuted this feature last week, and true to my word, it's back again. The concept is simple: take a song's title or meaning and relate it to a storyline or team in college basketball today. Let's get to it. Your suggestions are welcome: editor@collegehoopsjournal.com Kansas / Ben Folds Five, “Best Imitation of Myself” The story: We've seen this all before, remember? A deep team that's thought to be too deep. Questions ... Read More

Sweet 16 Preview: Michigan State-Kansas

Sweet 16 Preview: Michigan State-Kansas

What to Look For: Guard play under pressure. I can't decide of Kalin Lucas is closer to Damon Stoudamire or Saul Smith. Lucas has looked really, really rough in certain spots this year. Sherron Collins is now the crafty veteran, so it could be interesting to see a possible disparity between the two. Then again, Collins is no sure bet. It's probably the most underwhelming game you could imagine between two ... Read More

End of the KU-Mizzou Game

Bless the soul(s) who have been uploading some great end-of-game stuff on the YouTubes this season. If you missed it, set aside 10 minutes and watch Missouri suck the life out of Kansas to win last night's game. Terrific job on the call by Ron Franklin, by the way. ... Read More

Bill Self: Casually, Blatantly Committing Recruiting Violations?

Bill Self: Casually, Blatantly Committing Recruiting Violations?

Deadspin was tipped with this and ran with it about an hour ago. Seems Bill Self was in checking out the talent, including highly regarded John Wall, out of North Carolina, at a high school basketball tournament last weekend. Wall has not declared which team he plans on attending, and since that's the case, many scouts and coaches went to the tournament to see and be seen. But Self decided, reportedly, ... Read More

Kansas Will Not Attempt to be Another Florida

Kansas Will Not Attempt to be Another Florida

Jayhawks junior Brandon Rush and sophomore Darrell Arthur are trying themselves that ever-present verb at this time of year — foregoing — and making The Leap. So no aspirations of back-to-back titles a la Noah and Co. in '06 and '07. Chalmers still hasn't made up his mind ... boy, it'd be nice to see him back, and he'd be the BMOC for the entire year. That'd be nice. Just so you ... Read More

Here’s The Greatest Shot in the History of the Final Four

Here’s The Greatest Shot in the History of the Final Four

So chaotic, so flawed a play, it makes Chalmers' (who kind of fumbles the ball before he really goes up with it) shot all the more incredible. I'm still sick over it. I can't even imagine being a Memphis fan today. ... Read More

Yes … Heartbreak Hotel

Yes … Heartbreak Hotel

Well, I'm still not over it. I'm ready to say that Chalmers' shot is the biggest play in college basketball this side of the century. It's just unfortunate that it came from a coaching gaffe. (Preface:. Notice how I don’t even mention the fact that there was overtime. There was five extra minutes for another chance with plenty of time to make up what went wrong. But in sports it’s all ... Read More

2008 National Championship Game Live Blog

9:13 - OK, I'll go on the record and predict wildly: Memphis wins, 84-66. I'm not huge on predictions, but I'm also known for making a fool of myself. Interesting note: Nantz seemed to go out of his way to mention Packer's 34th-straight Final Four broadcast. It does seem like this could be his last. Also, Self just made a nice speech to his team with a "be ourselves, go ... Read More

And So We’ve Come…

And So We’ve Come…

We've reached the cul-de-sac on the Road to the Final Four. (Unnecessary admission: I once sang "End of the Road" as a joke, karaoke style, back in college. What a night that was, but I digress.) Of course I'll be live-blogging tonight, so be sure to check back in at 9. For now, how about some serious analysis. It is rather humorous how so many people decided that, hey, one ... Read More

KU-Memphis, Monday Night

KU-Memphis, Monday Night

Well, I got this one right. Don't worry, I just jinxed myself from correctly picking Memphis to win it all. A few quick hits: -I'll absolutely be putting up that sweet back door pass from Rose to CD-R, who then slammed it in Love's grill (followed by an immature pointing-and-laughing display by Dorsey). -Derrick Rose has gotten more impressive with each Tournament game he's played in. Are we in for the ultimate climax? -Both ... Read More

Five Reasons Why Kansas Won’t Win It All

Five Reasons Why Kansas Won’t Win It All

1) Because we've seen this before: A loaded Kansas team with a fistful of future pros coming up short in a big spot. 2) Because they escaped bad coaching at the end of their game with Davidson and should probably be watching in jumpsuits in their dorm rooms. 3) Because Kansas has gone through No. 16 Portland State, No. 8 UNLV, No. 12 Villanova and No. 10 Davidson to get here. 4) Because ... Read More

Final Four Storylines

Final Four Storylines

Just to put it all on the table, here's what we're looking at this weekend. The four teams combine for almost 6,900 wins, over 300 Tournament wins, 17 national titles and 51 Final Fours. Roy Williams will be coaching against his former team, Kansas, where he never won a national title, but made four Final Fours. You can make the argument that there are 19 potential NBA players playing amongst the four teams ... Read More

Davidson-Kansas Ending Under Review

Davidson-Kansas Ending Under Review

I admit, I quickly brought up ESPN.com when they opened with this today. That's good stuff. I wonder if they did it in one take. It kind of makes you hesitate when you see how good they are at feigning discouragement. What about all of the other issues they get so "heated? about? Still, I've loved the show since Day One. Feast Week Ends With A Very Sweet Dessert

Feast Week Ends With A Very Sweet Dessert

Sweet Maria. Kansas escaped. While most sports fans were absorbed with the Philadelphia/New England game, I was glued to this beauty of a basketball game. Then again, I have two televisions in my living room, so I had the luxury of keeping one eye on each. It wasn't the smoothest of games (more than 30 combined turnovers), but you can't say it wasn't entertaining. Brandon Rush's steal at the 2:20 mark of ... Read More

Goins’ groin shot on Cousins

Goins’ groin shot on Cousins

Published On Saturday, March 13th 2010

I get the feeling SEC coaches have purposefully gone after Cousins to try and get him to snap. That's not to say I think Bruce Pearl directly told Goins, "Hey, if you get a chance, throw a fist into DeMarcus' crotch," but I don't think coaches have shied away from telling their team that he's a hot head who will crack if you give him reason to.
