John Calipari quickly diffuses the “jag off” comment he made on ESPN

John Calipari quickly diffuses the “jag off” comment he made on ESPN

The good-natured ribbing occurs between 1:40 and 2:30 of the video, after Buccigross sneaks in a little shot at Memphis' inability to win that national title (which now wouldn't exist!) in 2008.

Tunes and teams Tuesday

Tunes and teams Tuesday

I debuted this feature last week, and true to my word, it's back again. The concept is simple: take a song's title or meaning and relate it to a storyline or team in college basketball today. Let's get to it. Your suggestions are welcome: editor@collegehoopsjournal.com Kansas / Ben Folds Five, “Best Imitation of Myself” The story: We've seen this all before, remember? A deep team that's thought to be too deep. Questions ... Read More

Texas and Kentucky tease the losing scenario, escape late with identical 72-67 victories

Texas and Kentucky tease the losing scenario, escape late with identical 72-67 victories

It was a wild Saturday, and while you could pick six or seven results as the headliner, I'll go with the top two, the only undefeated teams left, nearly falling. First, Texas. The Longhorns are beginning to wobble. They never led until overtime of their 72-67 win over 12-5, underrated Texas A&M. Damion James, he who had 26 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks, including a swat that thwarted A&M's chance to ... Read More

Dunk of the Year candidate: Travis Leslie

Dunk of the Year candidate: Travis Leslie

When your team is 8-6 and people are talking about how terrific a job you have done, you know expectations are low. But Mark Fox has Georgia in that "don't ever overlook them" territory. DeMarcus Cousins got John Wall'ed last night in the form of a Travis Leslie throwdown. CHJ has been tracking some of the best flushes this season. I'll have the finalists posted the week of the Final Four. ... Read More

John Wall, who else, gets first Sports Illustrated cover for college hoops this season

John Wall, who else, gets first Sports Illustrated cover for college hoops this season

Not counting the preview issue, of course. I'd say that cover may be one of the 100 best of all-time in the history of the magazine. Seriously. There's something about it. Helps that Wall's personality suggests this may have been the first or second take, too. If only the damn thing wasn't a regional cover. Regional covers are lame. Go big or go home, Sports Illustrated. When Wall's career is long over, I ... Read More

Quietly, Jemele Hill is forced to apologize to Kentucky for Charles Manson reference

Quietly, Jemele Hill is forced to apologize to Kentucky for Charles Manson reference

When Bobby Knights speaks his mind at ESPN (which has been rather tame), he's paid attention to and not disciplined by anyone. Ever. When someone who is not Knight speaks out To be fair, Knight hasn't said anything as stupid as what Jemele Hill (shocking!) said last week. On the Jemele Hill said (and I am paraphrasing) that UK fans would be fine with “Charles Manson as coach”, so long as ... Read More

The Honeymoon’s Over: All Sorts of Negative Buzz Around Kentucky

The Honeymoon’s Over: All Sorts of Negative Buzz Around Kentucky

Where should we start? Let's go with the allegations against John Calipari's former team, Memphis. It's alleged that, in all likelihood, Derrick Rose had someone else take the SATs for him. Yes, I agree: it's rather frightening to imagine that Derrick Rose didn't think he was capable of getting into Memphis without any outside help. Then again, he did admit to falling asleep with a knife earlier this season. The allegations include ... Read More

John Calipari is Swiftly Taking Over the College Basketball Universe

John Calipari is Swiftly Taking Over the College Basketball Universe

At this point, even Barack Obama must be in envy of John Calipari's ambition and deal-closing abilities. This morning, it was reported that Kentucky snatched the final piece of its recruiting puzzle: dynamic point guard John Wall. Wall, ranked the No. 1 point guard, No. 5 overall, on the ESPNU 100, informed Miami coach Frank Haith Tuesday morning that he had committed to Kentucky. The reasoning, according to a source, was because ... Read More

Calipari Is on a Roll Already

After wowing UK fans and brass alike by bringing up the fact he called nearly every living person of significance related to the University of Kentucky before and after taking the job, the pieces seem to be falling into place for John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats. There won't be one preseason poll that will have UK worse than 15th next season. The coach with the ridiculously loaded contract is ... Read More

Yes, Again, Officially Official: Calipari is Going to Kentucky

Memphis Roar is claiming Calipari is fleeing the state of Tennessee and heading west. Somebody staked out his house by a golf course. ESPN is also reporting it's official, but no link is up yet. UPDATE: ESPN's got it. ESPN.com's Andy Katz reported on Monday that the deal would be for eight years and approximately $35 million dollars, making Calipari the highest-paid coach in the college ranks. BREAKING: WHBQ in Memphis Reports Cal to UK (UPDATE: Confirmed)

Update: 6:35 p.m. ET: WHAS has reported that Calipari has accepted the job at Kentucky. WLEX has confirmed that report. It's all over but the press conference. Update, 3:43 p.m. ET: News is now starting to permeate that Memphis has asked permission to speak with Missouri's Mike Anderson. Calipari to Kentucky?

The rumors are swirling. The photoshopping connoisseurs have put together this terrific photo. Larry Vaught is the reporter who seems to have the only quasi-answers right now, and he addresses the possibilities of Cal to UK here, but you need a membership to Scout.com to read it. Vaught also went on Kentucky Sports Radio and declared a meeting with Calipari and Kentucky has or will be happening soon. Matt Jones of Kentucky ... Read More

The Beneficial Fallout from Kentucky

The Beneficial Fallout from Kentucky

Everyone seems to be thrilled about Billy Gillispie leaving — including Gillispie, who was all smiles at his 30-minute press conference today — and the University of Kentucky starting anew. UPDATE, 4:49 p.m.: "Kentucky and its fans deserve a coach that understands this is just not another coaching job," AD Mitch Barnhart said at his press conference. "It is a philosophical disparity that could not be repaired." Barnhart did take questions. On status of buyout: ... Read More
