In the wake of Texas’ loss, the question must be asked: Are the Longhorns too deep?

In the wake of Texas’ loss, the question must be asked: Are the Longhorns too deep?

STORRS, Conn. — As the clock wound down to zero in the final seconds before tip-off, it was clear why administrators decided to put the game at Gampel Pavilion, as opposed to the twice-as-big XL Center in Hartford. The administrators put the game at Gampel because the crowd is right on top of you. When you watch it on television, the gym appears tiny. It's not, but it's not that huge, ... Read More

Tunes and teams Tuesday

Tunes and teams Tuesday

I debuted this feature last week, and true to my word, it's back again. The concept is simple: take a song's title or meaning and relate it to a storyline or team in college basketball today. Let's get to it. Your suggestions are welcome: editor@collegehoopsjournal.com Kansas / Ben Folds Five, “Best Imitation of Myself” The story: We've seen this all before, remember? A deep team that's thought to be too deep. Questions ... Read More

Texas and Kentucky tease the losing scenario, escape late with identical 72-67 victories

Texas and Kentucky tease the losing scenario, escape late with identical 72-67 victories

It was a wild Saturday, and while you could pick six or seven results as the headliner, I'll go with the top two, the only undefeated teams left, nearly falling. First, Texas. The Longhorns are beginning to wobble. They never led until overtime of their 72-67 win over 12-5, underrated Texas A&M. Damion James, he who had 26 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks, including a swat that thwarted A&M's chance to ... Read More

Texas’ 2008-09 Team Just Took a Hit

Texas’ 2008-09 Team Just Took a Hit

Its best player — sophomore D.J. Augustin — and its most beautiful pair of eyelashes — junior A.J. Abrams — have both decided to declare for the draft. It's hard to argue against Augustin's decision: The kid has the makings of a wealthy man's Chris Paul. Augustin's statement, which was released by the team, may as well have been pressed onto the paper with a huge, ready-made stamp. "I have had ... Read More

Memphis Breaks Through

Memphis Breaks Through

Third year's the charm. Good for the Tigers—I'm rooting for them to win it all. They dispatch of Texas, 85-67. It's going to be Memphis-UCLA for the second time in three years. You'll hear plenty about Bill Walton's greatest performance of all-time leading up to this one, but I remember these two teams for one of the ugliest, most unwatchable contests in recent memory, when UCLA took out the Tigers in ... Read More

Wisconsin Gets a Great Road W

Wisconsin Gets a Great Road W

I was debating upon whether or not to make a post on this game due to the fact that there's still plenty of ball ahead of us on this Saturday, and maybe this won't be the best game/finish of the day. But why not? Right? We all love us some orange ball. The formerly thought-to-be-by-some best team in the nation Texas Longhornrs were felled by the Badgers Michael Flowers, 67-66. Note: ... Read More

Goins’ groin shot on Cousins

Goins’ groin shot on Cousins

Published On Saturday, March 13th 2010

I get the feeling SEC coaches have purposefully gone after Cousins to try and get him to snap. That's not to say I think Bruce Pearl directly told Goins, "Hey, if you get a chance, throw a fist into DeMarcus' crotch," but I don't think coaches have shied away from telling their team that he's a hot head who will crack if you give him reason to.

Another weak, only-verbal punishment, this time handed out by the WAC

Published On Wednesday, March 10th 2010

You know, I'm not saying we have to fine coaches every time or make them sit out a game, but now we're starting to see a bit of an unwanted pattern with coaches being "punished" by way of a short-but-sweet press release put out via said coach's conference Web site.
