The Student Section Supports: Dayton @ Xavier

The Student Section Supports: Dayton @ Xavier

“The Student Section Supports” highlights one game each weekend that is under the national radar and/or has high upset potential. This week we’re looking at a terrific matchup in the Atlantic 10. These two split meetings last year, each team winning on its home floor. It's a particularly early tip, so you may have the time to squeeze this one in Saturday morning. When: Saturday, 11 ET (ESPN2). XAVIER (11-5). Need to ... Read More

BREAKING: Sean Miller Flip-Flops, Goes to Arizona

BREAKING: Sean Miller Flip-Flops, Goes to Arizona

So says Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Ah, these college basketball coaches and their fickle ways. The move is the right one for Miller — and you wonder if Xavier can recover once again from a coach leaving its campus for a better job — as Arizona, you could argue, is not in the good shape Xavier is in right now but is the better program. Miller, 40, told Arizona he would remain ... Read More

Sweet 16 Preview: Pittsburgh-Xavier

Sweet 16 Preview: Pittsburgh-Xavier

What to Look For: I don't know if there's a better future pro in this field than Sam Young. So how does Xavier even try to match up? Kenny Frease, a still-developing 7-foot role player, or Jason Love, who stands 6-9, just do not match up to Young and DeJuan Blair. Pitt should try to pound and pound and pound. But the Panthers have given their fans about as much anxiety ... Read More

Five Early-Season Team Surprises

Five Early-Season Team Surprises

And like that, we're 1/5 through the college basketball season. While clubs like North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Gonzaga — heck, even a school like Wake Forest, who was expected to be a player — have started strong out of the gate, per usual, some schools sneak up on you. Here's CHJ's five most pleasant of surprises. Ohio State. Doing it with defense. More than eight blocks per game; holding opponents to ... Read More

“You Know What Really Grinds My Gears?”

“You Know What Really Grinds My Gears?”

I told you about my former college buddy who is a die-hard URI fan (though we both attended a D-III school in southwest Connecticut). Well, he (Justin) decided to take a trip to the Family Guy State on Monday and catch both the G'Town-Providence and Xavier-Rhode Island tilts. I asked him to bring a camera to capture the event so vividly and enable me to share his experiences with ... Read More

Battle of A-10’s Best Tonight

Battle of A-10’s Best Tonight

While Washington State/Arizona has its sexual qualities, there's no doubt about the fact that Dayton vs. Xavier (8 ET) is the Game of the Night. It's not being broadcast nationally, so I had to throw this friendly reminder out to you. In one corner: Dayton (14-2, 2-1), who has had their time in the spotlight and took over the crown while Xavier hit its slide in December. Dan Patrick's alma mater ... Read More

The Student Section Supports: Xavier @ Arizona State

Welcome to the second installment of "The Student Section Supports", where we take a look at one specific matchup that has the potential to either be a surprising upset or an extremely tight game between two evenly matched teams. Generally speaking, this segment will steer clear of the top, marquee matchups due to the fact that there will be plenty of press about those games, anyway. Today CHJ checks out ... Read More

Goins’ groin shot on Cousins

Goins’ groin shot on Cousins

Published On Saturday, March 13th 2010

I get the feeling SEC coaches have purposefully gone after Cousins to try and get him to snap. That's not to say I think Bruce Pearl directly told Goins, "Hey, if you get a chance, throw a fist into DeMarcus' crotch," but I don't think coaches have shied away from telling their team that he's a hot head who will crack if you give him reason to.

Another weak, only-verbal punishment, this time handed out by the WAC

Another weak, only-verbal punishment, this time handed out by the WAC

Published On Wednesday, March 10th 2010

You know, I'm not saying we have to fine coaches every time or make them sit out a game, but now we're starting to see a bit of an unwanted pattern with coaches being "punished" by way of a short-but-sweet press release put out via said coach's conference Web site.
